The current image with the puffball article appears to be of a Coprinus comatus, or shaggy mane, and not Calvatia gigantea, or giant puff ball.  Note the stalk and what appears on the ground to be the deliquescent remains of another Coprinus camatus.  This particular specimen doesn't exhibit the scales on the cap so prominently, which is a distinguishing characteristic.
