A tasty cake that my mother used to bake in the 1940s and 50s.

  1. Cream butter.
  2. Cream in brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in eggs one at time and then salt.
  4. Beat in half of flour.
  5. Stir grated orange rind into sour milk.
  6. Holding cup over batter for foaming, stir baking soda into sour milk and beat sour milk into batter.
  7. Beat in remaining half of flour.
  8. Stir in chopped walnuts and raisins until well incorporated.
  9. Pour into prepared pan and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes or until done.
  10. Meanwhile, combine powdered sugar and orange juice for glaze.
  11. When cake is done, remove from the oven and let stand for 10 minutes.
  12. Turn out onto wax paper on plate and then turn over onto plate with topside up.
  13. Spoon glaze over hot cake and let cool.
