  1. Sauté the onion and garlic in the oil in a large saucepan.
  2. Add the spices and cook over low heat for 4 minutes.
  3. Add the rice and lentils and stir to mix well.
  4. Slowly add water.
  5. Bring to a boil, turn the heat to low and cook for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the rice and lentils are tender.
