About Red Bream[]

The scientific name for Red Bream is Pagellus bogaraveo. This species measures almost 35 cm in seize and has a deep laterally flattened body, with large scales that can be also seen on its head. it has a single long dorsal fin whose anterior portion has no less thatn 12 spines. the posterior is formed of 12 to 13 soft branched rays. The top half of its head and body, along with the fins, is reddish orange which turns into a rose tinged silver of the sides and belly. The adult species have a black to blackish red spot behind the gill cover. Another feature of this species is the fact that it has large eyes that are further back than the low set mouth. Its front teeth are sharp and small while towards the rear it has 2 to 3 sets of small rounded blunt teeth. Red Bream is to be found in the rocks and seaweeds of shallow waters, down to depths of more than 250 meters. The migration occurs in summer while spawning can occur both in late summer and autumn. The food consists of crustaceans and small fish. Red Bream can be seen especially at the Western end of the Channel, as well as in South Ireland, but they can also spread up to the North Sea and Norway.
