Rakott Krumpli

Description

Rakott Krumpli (potato casserole) is a traditional meal eaten by Hungarian Jews during the "nine days". These are the first nine days of the month of Av, when orthodox Jews refrain from eating meat, in remembrance of the destruction of the Temple.

  • Rakott Krumpli from the Wikibooks Cookbook—original source of recipe, licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License
  • Cook Time: 30 minutes prep, 1 hour cooking

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cook the potatoes for about twenty five minutes.
  2. Peel the potatoes and the eggs.
  3. Slice eggs, potatoes (and kolbasz) into thick slices and arrange in alternating layers of potatoes, eggs (then kolbasz), with sour cream on the top.
  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 220°C for about 35 minutes or until they turn a light brown.

Tips

  • Non-Jewish Hungarians add sausage too. Slice the sausage, and layer between the potatoes and the sour cream.
