Pone Bread

Colloquial name for corn bread in the southern states of the USA.

1/2 cup hot water 6 cold biscuits 1 cup cornmeal 3/4 cup milk 4 tablespoons sugar 1 egg 3/4 teaspoon salt 4 tablespoons shortening

Mix first 7 ingredients.

Melt shortening in an 8-by-8-inch pan. While hot, pour melted shortening into batter. Stir at once, mixing thoroughly. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit until brown, about 30 minutes.
