  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Whip shortening and sugar in a bowl.
  3. Add molasses and beat until fluffy.
  4. Mix 2 cups flour with all remaining dry ingredients.
  5. Alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk to molasses batter, keeping fluffiness.
  6. Add flour until mixture is soft but not sticky.
  7. Roll out to about ¼ inch thickness and cut using a floured edge.
  8. Sprinkle with sugar.
  9. Bake for 9 – 11 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet.
