The Martini, more so than any other drink, embodies the class and style of the cocktail in the popular imagination. This cocktail is made with gin and vermouth, garnished with either a green olive or a lemon twist. The less vermouth it contains, the drier it is. A martini may be served Straight up or On the Rocks. It may also be made with vodka, in which case it's called a vodka martini. A Gibson is a martini garnished with a tiny white onion.

- Serves: 1
- A twist of lemon peel (including the pith); or,
- Cocktail olives, queen size at minimum. Or olive juice could be added to make it a dirty martini
- Fill a martini glass with ice and water, set aside to cool.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, add the vermouth.
- Fill the shaker again with ice, add 2 oz. gin, stir gently.
- Discard ice and water from the martini glass.
- Strain martini from cocktail shaker into glass.
- Garnish with one olive (two makes it a Franklin).
