Swiss roll or jelly roll

Jelly rolls[]

A dessert made by spreading jam or jelly on a thin layer of sponge cake which is then rolled up into a log shape. Occasionally, a layer of frosting is spread on top of the jam or jelly layer before rolling. Powdered sugar is usually sprinkled on the jelly roll, which is sliced and garnished for serving.

Swiss rolls[]

Known since the mid-1800s, Swiss rolls are cakes made of a thin sheet of sponge cake, spread with jam or jelly (and sometimes whipped cream or frosting) and rolled up. This type of cake is traditionally sprinkled with confectioners' sugar, rather than being frosted. When cut, Swiss rolls have an attractive pinwheel design. The British term for Swiss roll is jelly roll.
