A sandwich prepared with a frankfurter that is placed in a long split roll. The frankfurter, which is also known as a wiener, is a sausage made from beef or pork or both, encased in a thin membrane. Turkey and beef are also used in combination to make the sausage. The frankfurter can be cooked with various methods including frying, grilling, broiling, and steaming. The hot dog sandwich can be topped with a variety of condiments including mustard, ketchup, relish, cheese, and chili.

Hot dogs are extremely popular in Chicago, where they are sometimes referred to as a "Garden on a Bun". Though there are some minor local variations, the most traditional Chicago style dog is a steamed Vienna Beef hot dog on a steamed poppy seed bun, topped with yellow mustard, sweet relish (usually dyed bright green), chopped onion, tomato wedges, a dill pickle spear, a dash of celery salt and optionally a few sport peppers. Chicago style hot dog enthusiasts are adamant that ketchup, while extremely popular elsewhere, has absolutely no place on a traditional Chicago style hot dog. In fact, this is such a point of contention that some Chicago hot dog stands have been known to refuse service to those requesting ketchup on their dogs.
