As the name implies, Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers Cajun Style Chicken and Shrimp contains chicken medallions and shrimp in a "Cajun-style" tomato sauce. The chicken and shrimp are served with white rice, red and green bell peppers and celery.
This product utilizes the Healthy Choice microwave Steam Cooker. Supposedly, the steam cooker locks in the flavor of the food by allowing it to steam itself. Because the steamers are made with a self-venting film, there is no need to peel back the film and stir the meal halfway through cooking as with most frozen meals. In the colander-like steamers, the meat and vegetables sit above the sauce. After microwaving, the meat and vegetables are dumped into the sauce and the whole thing is eaten together. In addition to being low in calories this entree meets the American Heart Associations food criteria for saturated fat and cholesterol for healthy people over the age of two.
The lunch bunch from the Tulsa World website called the Cafe Steamers Cajun Style Chicken and Shrimp "surprisingly bland for a cajun dish", giving it a D overall. In addition, the shrimp tasted "unfresh" and "freezer burnt". While the chicken was the best part, reviewers still found it lacking.
Timothy S. Harlan, M.D (aka Dr. Gourmet) said that while the product met the heart healthy requirements of the American Heart Association, it was inedible and should not be endorsed by anyone. Unlike the Lunch Bunch, Harlan felt the chicken "[tasted] like the chicken that [he] had in those awful frozen pot pies as a kid". The shrimp "are tiny little tasteless bullets with the texture of rubber bands". Harlan felt that the worst part of the dish was the rice, which resembled Minute Rice.
