  1. Place the unpeeled yams in a large pot.
  2. Cover with cold water and bring to a boil.
  3. Let boil for 15 – 30 minutes till yams are cooked through.
  4. Drain yams, cool somewhat then peel.
  5. Place into a large bowl with the butter, salt and pepper.
  6. Mash with a potato masher until very smooth.
  7. Place into a serving bowl.
  8. Wet your hands with water, form into a ball and serve.
