Franken Riesling

A grape varietal, most notably known as Sylvaner, used in the production of white wine. Believed to have originated in Austria only small amounts are planted there in modern day. Sylvaner is being replaced by Müller-Thurgau, a hybrid of Riesling and Sylvaner. Although it is grown in the United States, (specifically California), Alsace, Switzerland, Chile, and Northern Italy, production has been dramatically reduced. Germany has become the most extensive producer of the Sylvaner (Silvaner) varietal, mainly in Rheinhessen, Rheinpfalz, and Franken. The highest quality Sylvaner’s are produced in Alsace (France), Franken (Germany), Switzerland, and Italy.
