Snacks are typically served in-between meals, and most often consist of yams served with eggs. However, even more consistent snacks, such as kebabs and frikkadels (little hamburgers seasoned with nutmeg) can be served as snacks. Biltong, the national dried sausage is usually thin sliced and served plain as a fast snack, or on platters with fresh tomatoes and onions for a delicious consistent snack. Hot and spicy peanuts are great South African snacks and are often commercialized and sold in small bags together with almonds, raisins, coconut flakes and crispy sticks. Sweet pastry snacks are often made from the same dough as bread, only flavored with sugar and sweet seeds, separated in rectangular slabs and dried in the oven till they become crispy. Some may even be served with marmalade, or made wit buttermilk and muesli. Other sweet snacks are the buttermilk rusks, nutty wheat buttermilk biscuits, and melktert, milk tarts.
