The most common beverage is the chicha, which belongs to the people in the Andean region and it has numerous variants. In Nicaragua, the drink basically means soft drink ands it is prepared from maiz morado (purple corn) and it is consumed as a soft drink and drunk from special cans. The frutillada is a variant of chicha which includes strawberries and the quinoa is a pale white version of the drink. Chicha can also be made of wheat, barely and a sort of beans. The atol is a liquid cornstarch pudding which is also consumed as a dessert. Other drinks include lemonade and various thin fruit juices, tea and coffee.
