Malawi is an agricultural society. Because foods are not widely imported, the availability of items depends on the growing season. Tomatoes, onions, bananas and a few varieties of greens are available year round. Other fruits and vegetables, such as pineapples, guavas, mangoes, papayas, tangerines, lemons, cucumbers, eggplants, carrots, green peppers, and cabbage are available dependent on the season and region. Foods that can be stored easily, such as peanuts, maize, and beans, can be purchased cheaply at harvest time, but increase in price as the year progresses. There is a vast variety of foods that are cooked using these vegetables and fruits. Some of the Malawian vegetarian recipes are listed below.
Masamba is a dish prepared with kale, spinach, collards or pumpkin leaves. Other ingredients include peanut powder, onions and tomatoes.
Ngaiwa Phala is a dish that is eaten for breakfast, preferably sweetened with a lot of sugar. The ingredients are ngaiwa (whole ground dry maize), milk and salt.
Mkhwani with Groundnut (peanut) Flour is made using pumpkin leaves, de-veined and chopped, tomatoes, groundnut flour and salt.
