Malawians enjoy desserts and they eat them as often as they can. However, because of the people’s poverty, desserts are served at special occasions.

Nthochi (banana) Bread is made using sugar, flour, eggs, bananas, milk and baking powder. This dessert is light and very popular especially in the northern regions of Malawi.

Mbatata (sweet potato) cookies can be cut in the shape of hearts to commemorate the Malawian people, who call their country the "warm heart of Africa".

Another dessert is Mtedza (peanut) Puffs. It is made from peanuts, sugar, vanilla, flour and salt. You roll the mixture into small rolls and bake them.

Zitumbuwa (banana fritters) is a delicious dessert that is very easy to make. You have to mash the bananas and mix them with salt, sugar, and ufa (cornmeal). After that, you fry spoonfuls of this mixture in very hot oil.
