While the Japanese dessert does not correspond to the Western dessert. Various "Okashi" are presented as a sort of in-between meal snack or before and after a meal with tea. "Okashi" is a culinary term, which comes from a word meaning "fruit" and refers to "small confections". This refers back to Ancient time when fruit was commonly eaten as snacks. Made from varied ingredients most okashi are made of (Azuki Bean) or (lotus root).

Fruit is more commonly offered at a meals end, you may have recognized this if you have eaten at Japanese style restaurants. "Wagashi" is also a term used to refer to "sweets", and such confections were derived from the Portuguese and Dutch in the form of sweetmeats and rice cakes.
