In Eritrea, the appetizers are consumed either between the meals or before a meal. A popular appetizer is the popcorn which is generally served along with coffee. Hembesha can also be served as appetizer and it is a sort of bread made of lukewarm water, fresh yeast, grinded fenugreek seed, grinded coriander seed, and grinded cardamom seed, crushed garlic, salt, egg, oil or butter mix with wheat flour. Another appetizer served with coffee is lettuce and tomato salad combined with oil, salt and strips of injera. Almost all appetizers found in the Eritrean cuisine are very spicy like all food.
