People in Cameroon don’t usually buy their alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. Beer from maize or millet is produced in many households.
Many women produce bil-bil, a local alcoholic beverage derived from millet and sold at the weekly markets on Thursday and Saturday nights.
Cardamom Tea is a hot tea spiced with cardamom that is very popular in Cameroon.
Chai is another type of tea that can be served hot or cold. To make it, mix in a saucepan equal parts cold water and milk, black tea, cardamon seeds or ground cardamom, ground ginger and sugar. Bring the mixture to a low boil and simmer for a few minutes. Pour the tea through a strainer into a teapot and serve.
Jus de Bissap is made from the dried red flowers of Hibiscus sabdariffa, a kind of hibiscus plant. Every busy street, train station, bus depot, and stadium will have its bissap vendors selling the drink.
Ginger Beer is a home-made non-alcoholic drink. In Cameroon, shopkeepers often sell their homemade ginger drink, sometimes in recycled vegetable-oil bottles. Ginger beer can be enjoyed chilled over ice, or diluted with cold water.
