The Burundi snacks are not cooked meals, as they basically represent simple meals, consumed fresh most of the times. Sugar cane, groundnuts and bananas are among the most common Burundi snacks. There is a special type of banana which is intensively consumed as a snack: the ibitoke. The green plantain is peeled by cutting it vertically and then the skin is stripped off; the ripe plantains have a thinner skin and their fruit is usually cooked, not served fresh, like the banana. Beans, maize and manioc are other common desserts, served usually fried or boiled, with spices like salt and pepper of all colors.
