A traditional kind of light soup is the one called Burundi light soup and it includes vegetables, meat and fufu; this is sometimes served before the meal, as an appetizer and sometimes it includes ginger and chili. Meats like sheep and goat (or occasionally beef) are served stewed or simply roasted over a wooden fire and served with local breads, chapatti, and plain or with rice the plantain, fried or boiled is served as a main course, as a snack or as a vegetarian dish. The Burundi cooked desserts are almost all based on the local fruit, the banana.
