Meat is not at all a staple in the Burundi cuisine, as this aliment is consumed only a few times per month. Some families raise cows, sheep and goats and these kinds of meat are prepared boiled, stewed or simply roasted over a wooden fire and served with local breads, chapatti, plain or with rice. Still, some people refer to cattle as statue symbols, so these are not so much consumed. In the exotic natural spaces of Burundi, there can be found many colored birds, monkeys and other wild animals, so the meat dishes occasionally include monkey, antelope and warthog.
