The traditional Burundi drink is the urwarwa, which is basically a banana wine and it is mostly served on special occasions and celebrations. The drink is homemade by the inhabitants and it is also consumed as part of a meal. Beer is also popular, especially primus beer and impeke, which is also homemade ands contains sorghum. The impeke is drunk through straws from a single bottle – a fact which symbolizes friendship and unity in the Burundi culture. Due to the fact that Burundi people are great exporters of coffee (around 80 % of the export) and tea, these two drinks are also common and accompany any Burundi dish.
