The Albanian name for appetizers is meze. Most Albanian appetizers are based on meat, cheese and vegetables, in various combinations. The majority of the appetizers are usually served with alcoholic drinks. Sausages and yogurt are important ingredients in the appetizers. These foods are spicy, salty or astringent and their major goal is to increase the appetite. The most important Albanian appetizers are represented here:

Romaine salad: that is made in Tirana may also be served as an appetizer. It contains lettuce, green onions, boiled eggs, oil, salt, pepper and lemon juice.
